Who is Hal?

Hal Schulman is an image maker based in Brooklyn. He makes images that move, images that are still, he directs photography, and is a technician of light. Hal was born and raised in Syracuse, NY where he aspired to become a professional magician. When he wasn’t performing at local private events, he was using his family’s video camera to shoot and edit videos.

These passions led Hal to study at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, where he earned a BFA in Film and Television Production, with a concentration in cinematography. Hal works weekly in the camera department of Saturday Night Live’s film unit and was recently was the Lighting Director for Vogue’s 2023 Met Gala Red Carpet Coverage. Hal’s photos have been published in The New York New York Times, Wall Street Journal, and on the cover of theatrical Playbills.

When he’s off set, Hal still practices magic and can be found roaming the streets with a 35mm film camera capturing the sights of the city.
